What's striking is that comparable medicinal traditions took shape independently in India, Persia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, regions with no direct contact with one another at the time these practices emerged. Nobody was exporting the idea. Each culture appears to have arrived at cannabis-as-medicine on its own, working from the same starting point: a fiber and seed crop that people already knew intimately, whose other properties eventually became impossible to ignore.
Rome, Persia, and Egypt: The Same Ailments, Different Empires

Egypt's evidence is physical rather than textual, and that's what makes it convincing. Hemp fiber has turned up in tomb contexts, and pollen analysis from Nile delta sediment cores confirms hemp was actually grown in the region, not just imported as a curiosity. It's the most intuitive of the three methods, which may be exactly why it shows up almost everywhere cannabis grew.

Physicians of the Islamic Golden Age, writing between the 9th and 16th centuries CE, gave this empirical inheritance its most systematic treatment. Practitioners working in this tradition catalogued cannabis preparations for epilepsy, pain, and inflammation with a specificity -- dosage, preparation method, indicated ailment -- that reads less like folk remedy and more like formulary. A 2026 academic paper revisiting these texts argues their descriptions of anti-inflammatory and analgesic use anticipate findings now emerging from cannabinoid receptor research, a continuity of nearly a millennium between clinical observation and mechanistic explanation.
What 2026 Lab Research Says About Why This Pattern Exists
