Growing landrace

WHAT TO EXPECT

Landrace lines are far less domesticated than a modern hybrid. That is the point of them, and it is also what catches people out.

01Expect height

Many equatorial landraces stretch three to four times after the flip and can pass 10ft outdoors. Plan vertical space or train hard from early veg.

02Expect a long finish

Thai, Nepalese and Colombian lines can flower 14–16 weeks. At higher latitudes outdoors they may not finish before the autumn rain.

03Expect males

These are regular seed, so roughly half will be male. Sex at week 4–6 from preflowers and pull males before the sacs open unless you are breeding.

04Expect variation

A landrace is a population, not a clone line. Two seeds from one pack can differ noticeably — that diversity is exactly what you are buying.

If this is a first grow, start with a feminized autoflower instead and come back to landrace once you have a run under your belt.

Are landrace seeds feminized?

No. Landrace lines are sold as regular seed, so roughly half come out male. That is deliberate — you need both sexes to breed, and a landrace you cannot breed from is not much use as a landrace. Sex at week 4–6 and pull males before the sacs open.

Why do landrace strains take so long to flower?

Equatorial lines evolved where day length barely changes, so they never needed to rush. Thai, Colombian and Nepalese lines commonly run 14–16 weeks. Hindu Kush and other mountain indicas finish much faster at 8–10.

Can I grow landrace indoors?

Yes, with vertical space and patience. Expect three to four times stretch after the flip, so flip early and train hard. A SCROG net is close to essential for the tall sativa lines.
