How to Research Cannabis Laws with the Maps

A quick, practical guide to looking up cannabis legality by country or U.S. state — and citing it properly.

Research any country in 5 steps

  1. Open the Global map. It loads on the 3D Globe Earth view. Prefer a flat map? Tap Flat Earth in the toggle next to Reset.
  2. Find your country. Type it into the search box, pick it from the full A–Z directory below the map, or (on the globe) drag to spin and tap it. Scroll or pinch to zoom.
  3. Read the status. The colour tells you the category at a glance (see the legend); the popup gives a plain-language summary of what's legal.
  4. Check the sources. Every country panel links official or authoritative references (EUDA, national regulators, UNODC) so you can verify and go deeper.
  5. Share the exact view. Use the panel's copy-link button — it links straight to that country, e.g. #Niger, perfect for citing in notes or posts.

Research any U.S. state in 4 steps

  1. Open the USA map and search or tap a state.
  2. Read adult-use vs. medical status and the general possession/home-grow posture in the popup.
  3. Mind the federal line. Each state notes how state law sits against federal scheduling — important for anything crossing state lines.
  4. Cite it. Follow the NCSL/DEA/CDC links in the panel, and copy the state's deep link (e.g. #TX) to share.

Reading the colour legend

  • Commercial / ExportingFully legal adult-use plus a licensed commercial or export industry.
  • Recreational LegalAdult-use possession and, in most cases, sales are legal.
  • Medical LegalA legal medical-cannabis program for registered patients.
  • Hemp / CBD / DecriminalizedLow-THC/CBD only, or possession decriminalized to a fine.
  • ProhibitedCannabis is illegal, with criminal penalties.
  • Extreme PenaltiesProhibition with severe penalties (long prison terms or worse).

Tips

Click a legend chip to filter the map to just that category. On the globe, a tap that isn't a drag opens the country; a drag spins it. Both maps are updated monthly, so bookmark them rather than screenshotting. There may also be an easter egg or two hidden on the globe — spin down to the bottom of the world and see.
