Flower rosin generally presses somewhere between 170F and 220F, and most 2026-era SOPs have converged on 185F as the sensible starting point for a first press — hot enough to get good flow and yield, cool enough to leave your terpene profile mostly intact.
Running on the lower end of that range, 170-190F, gives you lighter, almost honey-gold rosin with noticeably better terpene retention. You'll usually give up a couple percentage points of total yield compared to a hotter press, but what you keep tastes like the strain instead of tasting like burnt toast. That trade is almost always worth it.
Here's the part that surprises people who've been pressing for a while: running too hot is still the most common mistake even among experienced operators, not just beginners. If your rosin comes out dark, has a greenish tint, or dabs harsh with a chemical or ashy edge, that's a heat problem in the vast majority of cases — not bad flower, not bad technique elsewhere in the process. Chlorophyll and lipids break down and bleed into your oil as temperatures climb, and once that's happened there's no fixing it after the fact.

Live rosin made from fresh-frozen hash occupies the coolest end of the spectrum, typically 140-160F. This material is loaded with volatile monoterpenes that vaporize and degrade quickly under heat, so 'low and slow' isn't a suggestion here — it's the whole point of working with fresh-frozen input in the first place. If you paid a premium for fresh-frozen hash and then press it at flower temperatures, you've thrown away exactly what you paid for.
Pressure: Why Your Press's Tonnage Rating Is Almost Meaningless

Recommended platen pressure ranges from 300-600 PSI for hash/kief to 600-1000 PSI for flower, showing that denser flower material requires roughly double the pressure of hash or kief.
Here's something almost nobody explains clearly when you buy your first press: the tonnage number stamped on the machine tells you almost nothing about what your material is actually experiencing. Tonnage is a measure of total force. Pressure — the number that actually matters for rosin quality — is force divided by area, and area depends entirely on your plate size and how much material you load.
Run the math and it gets concrete fast. Two tons of force equals 4,000 pounds. Spread that over 4 square inches of material — a small bag on a compact plate — and you're looking at 1,000 PSI. Spread that same 2 tons over 8 square inches and you've cut your actual pressure in half, to 500 PSI, using the identical tonnage setting. Two presses, same gauge reading, completely different results, because nobody accounted for plate area.
For flower rosin, the target most pressers converge on is 600-1,000 PSI measured at the bag. On a standard 3x5 inch plate (15 square inches), that translates to roughly 4-10 tons of force to hit that pressure window — a wide range because bag size, material amount, and how tightly you pack your bag all shift the real number.
Hash and kief need noticeably less pressure than flower, generally 300-600 PSI. These materials have already had most of the plant fiber removed, so they don't need to be crushed through as much structural resistance to release oil — over-pressing hash tends to pull more plant lipids and waxes through the bag along with the good stuff, muddying your final product.
The practical takeaway: don't copy a tonnage number you saw on a forum post or in a video, because it was calculated for someone else's plate size and bag configuration. Measure your own plate area, do the arithmetic, and set your press to hit a real PSI target rather than a borrowed tonnage figure that may mean something entirely different on your equipment.
Dialing In Press Time and Prep Before You Ever Squeeze

What happens before you ever engage the plates matters as much as the temperature and pressure settings themselves, and this is where a lot of beginners lose yield without ever realizing prep was the culprit.
Total press time for flower generally runs 60-120 seconds, and it should move inversely with temperature. A plate that reads 185F on the display but hasn't fully soaked to that temperature throughout its mass will press inconsistently — sometimes running cooler than intended for the first 20-30 seconds of a cycle. This is a genuinely hidden cause of inconsistent results, and beginners almost always misdiagnose it as a temperature setting problem when it's actually a patience problem.
None of this compensates for weak starting material, though. Resin-rich, well-cured flower presses forgivingly across a wider range of settings than thin, over-dried, or genetically mediocre bud — it simply has more to give up. The process itself is simple. Seal your freshly pressed rosin in a glass jar immediately after collection and put it in the refrigerator for 24-72 hours. During that window, the oil undergoes a physical transformation — separating and reorganizing at the molecular level as it cools slowly rather than being agitated or whipped.
What comes out the other side is a completely different texture than what went in. Rosin that was runny, sappy oil straight off the parchment often firms up into a stable, creamy consistency, sometimes closer to a badder or budder texture depending on the strain's terpene and cannabinoid profile. This isn't just cosmetic — a properly cold-cured product handles better, packages better, and in a lot of cases tastes cleaner once it's had time to settle.
There's a real limit here worth being honest about, though: cold curing works best — really, only works properly — when your initial press temperature was on the lower end to begin with. If you scorched a batch at 210-220F, cold curing isn't going to rescue the terpene loss that already happened during the press. You can chill degraded rosin all day and it'll still taste like degraded rosin, just at a different consistency. Cold cure is a finishing technique, not a repair technique.
That limitation is exactly why cold curing and the broader move toward lower press temperatures have grown up together rather than as separate trends. Both are aimed at the same target — preserving the terpene structure that gives rosin its flavor and effect — just at different stages of the process. That's a safe, well-tested baseline that won't scorch decent material and won't leave obvious yield on the table either. Don't try to optimize on press one — just get a clean result you can actually learn from.
From there, change one variable at a time. If your second press adjusts temperature, leave pressure and time alone. If you're testing a longer press time, hold temperature and PSI steady. Changing two things at once might get you a better-looking press, but you won't know which change caused it, and you'll be back to guessing on press four.
Keep a log. Write down temperature, PSI, time, total yield in grams, and a quick note on color and taste for every single press, even the bad ones — especially the bad ones. Pressers are running cooler and slower now than they were even three or four years ago, and it's not a fad — it's the direct result of people tasting the difference and not wanting to go back.
