Aurora Borealis – Green + Purple Pheno | Regular Photoperiod Seeds
Courtesy of Chris & Steve's Outdoor Open Field Project · Grown in Maine · Harvested Fall 2024
Our Aurora Borealis – Green + Purple Pheno seeds come from Aurora Borealis mothers that held their green coloration splashed with purple hues and threw gassy, tangy citrus, lemon and light fruit terpenes. Pollinated at random by the males of a 5,000-plant Maine open field, each seed is a unique combination waiting to be discovered — a true pheno hunter's playground.
Quick Facts
- Mother Plant: Aurora Borealis
- Father (Pollen Donor): Randomized — open-field pollination (see Genetics Present in the Field)
- Type: Indica-leaning hybrid (Aurora Borealis mother × open-field pollen)
- Seed Type: Regular (NOT feminized) — expect both male and female plants
- Flower Cycle: Photoperiod — flowers under a 12/12 light cycle or natural autumn daylength
- Harvest Blend: Green x Purple Harvest Blend
- Mother Plant Terpenes: Gas, tangy citrus, lemon, light fruit
- Origin: Outdoor open-pollinated field, Maine, USA
- Project: Chris & Steve's Outdoor Open Field Project
About the Green x Purple Harvest Blend
Seeds in this harvest blend were collected only from female plants that showed green coloration with purple hues, with terpene expressions that leaned gassy notes, tangy citrus, lemon and light fruit undertones. Because the field was open-pollinated, any male plant in the population could have pollinated these females — so each seed may produce a different phenotype. The plants pictured on this page show a typical expression of the blend, but every seed can grow into something unique.
The Maine 5,000-Plant Pheno Hunt
A 100% off-grid cannabis population grown deep in the rugged Maine backwoods. For Chris & Steve's Outdoor Open Field Project, roughly 5,000–6,000 plants were grown from regular seed across about one acre of outdoor farmland, and male and female plants were allowed to pollinate naturally across the entire field. The result is a huge, genetically diverse seed population where every seed is a unique combination drawn from thousands of plants — made for growers who enjoy phenotype hunting, breeding projects and large outdoor plant populations.
Genetics Present in the Field
The population included genetics related to:
- Purple Jello
- Grape Jelly
- Blackberry Haze
- Northern Lights
- Aurora Borealis
- Purple Haze
Because pollen moved freely through the field, every seed represents a new genetic combination drawn from these lineages.
Built for Pheno Hunters & Breeders
Most breeder projects are developed from very small plant populations — sometimes only a few dozen plants. This field had thousands of plants growing together, letting pollen move naturally through the entire population. Because of this:
- Every seed carries a different genetic combination
- Rare phenotypes can appear
- Terpene expressions vary widely
- Plant colors and structures can differ dramatically
These are population genetics, not stabilized breeder seeds designed to produce identical plants. The goal is to grow multiple plants and discover your own standout phenotype.
Ideal for: pheno hunters, breeders, outdoor growers, large-population planting and growers exploring diverse genetics.
Example Pheno Hunt Strategy
- Germinate as many seeds as your space allows (many hunters start 50–100)
- Identify the most vigorous plants
- Select standout terpene profiles, colors or structures
- Clone the best plant to preserve your keeper phenotype
Because these seeds come from a 5,000+ plant population, growing larger numbers of plants dramatically increases your chances of finding a rare or exceptional phenotype.
Regular Seeds (Not Feminized)
The entire field was grown from regular seed and pollinated naturally, so this population carries a natural mix of sexes — your plants may grow male or female. Identify sex at pre-flower and remove males from your flower space, or keep a standout male for your own breeding work. Per the growers, no hermaphrodite plants were observed during the grow.
Growing Expectations
- Outdoor-Proven in Maine: Collected from mother plants that finished in Maine's short northern season (harvested Fall 2024)
- Estimated Flowering Time: 8–10 weeks (estimate based on the parent lineages; individual phenotypes vary)
- Estimated Outdoor Harvest: Late September to mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere
- Plant Structure: Medium, indica-style structure with frosty, purple-flecked colas (varies by phenotype)
- Yield & Potency: Vary by phenotype — that's part of the hunt
- Environment: Grown outdoors from day one; well suited to outdoor and greenhouse grows, and manageable indoors with training
Seed Lot Sampling
The growers weighed and counted a sample of the raw, unsorted Green x Purple Harvest Blend seed lot:
- 7 g sample: ≈ 376 seeds
- Mature seeds: 335
- Immature seeds: 41
- Maturity rate: roughly 89% mature
As with any open-field harvest, a small share of seeds may be immature, so we recommend starting a few extra seeds to give yourself plenty of plants to hunt through.
Germination Tips
Many growers use the wet paper towel method. If you're having trouble getting seeds to pop, the growers recommend a straight water soak for troubleshooting:
- Place seeds in a cup of room-temperature water
- Store the cup in a cool, dark place
- Wait for the seeds to crack
- Transfer sprouted seeds to soil or your preferred growing medium
Time-saving option: outdoor growers can also germinate seeds straight into the ground.
Harvest Information
- Harvested: Fall 2024
- Grow Method: Outdoor open pollination
- Location: Maine, USA
- Population Size: ~5,000–6,000 plants
- Grow Area: ~1 acre
- Storage: Dried and stored in a cool, dry environment at approximately 55% humidity to preserve viability
- Hermaphrodites: None observed during the grow
Limited Population Release
These seeds represent one harvest from this population grow. Once this lot is sold out, these seeds will not be reproduced.
Explore the Other Harvest Blends
Seeds from the field were grouped into Harvest Blends based on the phenotype of the mother plants, so each blend explores a different corner of the population's genetic diversity:
- Northern Lights – Green Pheno — Green Harvest Blend (citrus, pine, lemon)
- Purple Haze – Light Purple Pheno — Light Purple Harvest Blend (gas, fruit, grape)
- UNKNOWN? – Red + Black Pheno — Red/Black Harvest Blend (sweet, grape, fruit)
- Grape Jelly – Deep Purple Pheno — Dark Purple Harvest Blend (grape, hard candy, sweet candy)
A Quick Note: We offer these seeds for their genetic preservation and collection value. Please be aware of and respect the laws in your area regarding germination and cultivation. Not available for shipment to Pennsylvania.
